Askett Nurseries - February 2010

The winter weather does seem to have been with us for ever - we've all had enough of this cold!  All gardeners are eagerly awaiting any sign of Spring.

We have our Seed Potatoes, Onions Sets and our full range of seeds and all propagation products - all ready for you to start growing your own vegetables. For some early colour, our first wave of primroses, polyanthus and pansies - all hardy - are ready too.

Next month we should have some news of a new, exciting venture at Askett Nurseries - more about that soon.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Askett Nurseries - January 2010

So, Christmas and 2009 have gone - welcome to 2010. And what a welcome!  Snow everywhere - and deep too. The nursery is under around 6" of the stuff as I write - but we have been able to clear our gates, so we're able to open. And a good job too - as we're selling coal, logs, Calor Gas and bird food by the truck load!  No plants though, unsurprisingly.

Normally at this time of year we would be ready for our delivery of Seed Potatoes - but due to the weather we have put our order back to the end of the month.

Hopefully, the snow will have thawed by then!
So keep warm - and we'll see you soon.

Happy New Year from
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Askett Nurseries - November 2009

Now the clocks have gone back, the summer has officially ended.  Not the hot sultry season we were promised, although September and October were nice and warm.  Now is the time to tidy up the garden for winter - we have some great deals on leaf rakes etc - so there's no excuse not to get all those leaves collected and put on the compost heap.  There's still plenty of time to plant your spring bulbs - you can put your tulips in right up to Christmas.

As the weather has been nice and mild, there haven't been any frosts to polish off your geraniums and begonias yet - but they will come!  We are fully stocked with winter pansies, violas, primroses and wallflowers - all completely hardy, they will give you lots of colour throughout the dark, damp days to come.

We have all our winter fuel in now - coal, smokless, logs, kindling, Calor gas and paraffin.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Askett Nurseries - October 2009

We had a splendid September, lots of sunshine and warm weather. This means that all of the summer bedding is still going strong - but it can't be long before the first frosts arrive.  With that in mind, our winter pansies, primroses and Autumn bedding are all ready - and there's still plenty of time to plant up all your Spring flowering bulbs.
This is a great time to improve the structure of your soil ready for next Spring - we have great deals on Farmyard Manure and Mulch n Mix - a good application now will really benefit your vegetable patch next Summer.

We are now fully stocked with our Winter Fuel - coal, logs, smokeless and kindling - and also this year we are stocking log baskets and fireseide accessories.

Our Craft Fair last month was a great success - do take a look at the photo gallery in our new Craft Fair section. Our next fair is a Christmas Special on Sunday 13th. If you are involved in a craft, and would like a space do give Amanda a call on 01844 274635.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Askett Nurseries - September 2009

After what seems the briefest of Summers, we are now officially in the Autumn season.  We are fully stocked with our Spring bulbs and Autumn bedding plants - as well as all the lawn products you require to keep your grass looking good.  This is a great time to plant perennials and shrubs - as well as roses and climbers - we have a great selection of fresh stock in.

We have unbeatable deals on compost, chipped bark and bulb fibre - free local delivery for heavier loads!

This Autumn we have a large area of the garden centre designated to bird food and care.  We have a huge range of birdtables, feeders and accessories - do come in and have a look.

On Sunday 13th September we are holding a Craft Fair - there are still stalls available - if you are interested in coming along please give Amanda a call on 01844 274635.

See you soon,

Askett Nurseries - August 2009

For us at the nursery, August is a month of change. The Spring and Summer bedding and container plants have been and gone, and we await the arrival of the Autumn stock.  We await the delivery of our first Spring flowering bulbs and the initial batch of pansies, prmroses and violas.

The weathermen promised us a Summer of scorching temperatures - although, as you all know, this just has not happened.  July was a damp month - not much sun at all. So let's hope the weather bucks up for August and we get an Indian Summer in September.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries

Askett Nurseries - July 2009

It's been a great Summer so far with some lovely spells of fine weather - ideal conditions for gardeners. The 'Grow Your Own'  movement has continued to gather pace, and sales of vegetable seeds and plants has been constant all through June.

There's still time to sow quick growing vegetables such as radishes, beetroot and spinach - so if you haven't had a go with your own produce, do give it a try.

It's the second year for our vegetables patch, and using last year's experience we are already harvesting some nice crops of rhubarb, courgettes, early potatoes and peas. We still have a nice range of bedding and container plants available, and our roses are looking particularly good this year.

It's frightening to think that our first Spring flowering bulbs will be arriving in the next few weeks!  Where has the first half of 2009 gone?

See you soon,
Simon, Alison and Edith the Jack Russell.

Askett Nurseries - June 2009

Well, we've just had a marvellous May. Lots of sunshine and no frosts - just the right climate for plenty of good gardening.

As expected, everyone has gone 'Grow Your Own' crazy - with vegetable seeds and plants just flying out of the door. So many customers are trying veg growing for the first time - and once they find how easy it is to succeed, I'm sure they'll do even more next year.

We are still fully stocked with lots of bedding and patio plants - it's not too late to get those tubs, containers and baskets brimming with colour for the summer.
Let's hope the cracking weather continues through June.

See you soon.
Simon, Alison, Edith and all at Askett Nurseries.

Askett Nurseries - May 2009

Now we're in May, and the real gardening can begin!  It would be nice to be certain that the threat of frosts has gone, but unfortunately, things don't work like that!

It is tempting to have a few fine days, and think the time is right to start planting out all those lovely tender bedding plants and vegetables - but it's far too early, so do be patient and wait until the second half of the month, at the very earliest.

The 'Grow Your Own'  movement continues at a pace, and we have a huge range of veg seeds and plants just right for your veg patch or allotment. It's not too late to sow all the vegetables - indeed, for many of the quick germinating produce such as Runner Beans, it's wise to wait a couple more weeks.

We've had a great start to the Spring with fine and warm weather, let's hope May is the same.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison and Edith the Jack Russell.

Askett Nurseries - April 2009

We've had a really warm March - a great start to the gardening season.  There's no doubt, even the keenest gardener needs some good weather to get motivated - and it's clear that the sunshine has brought many folk into their gardens this Spring.

As was the case last year, the real growth area is the Grow Your Own vegetable movement - seed sales have gone through the roof - and we've heard that local allotments are all full, many now have waiting lists!

We now stock four different ranges of vegetable seeds - as well of course all the extra bits and pieces needed to get your own veg patch going. If you've missed the boat with seeds - don't worry, this season we have a huge range of vegetable plants ready to go straight into the garden.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison, Edith the Jack Russell and all at Askett Nurseries.

Askett Nurseries - March 2009

Now that was a real winter!  Deep snow, sub- zero temperatures - just like old times!
A few weeks ago we were under deep snow and the Spring seemed a long way off - but during the second half of February the weather  bucked up, and we're now well into gardening season.

There's no doubt that more and more gardeners are starting to grow their own vegetables - we have seen seed sales rocket over the last few years -and this season we have taken on another couple of seed collections, so we now have a huge selection on offer.

Why not get a bit of early Spring colour in your garden?  We are fully stocked with Primroses, Pansies, Potted Bulbs and many early flowering perrenials - all looking fantastic.

See you soon,
Simon, Alison and all at Askett Nurseries

Askett Nurseries - February 2009

After a cold January, we've started this month with a deep covering of snow - so it seems we're still a few weeks away from the gardening season getting underway.

We have had our first delivery of seed potatoes, onion sets, shallots, garlic and our full range of seeds and composts - so if you have a greenhouse it's a great time to sow some early crops under cover. We still have plenty of coal, logs and winter fuel and Calor Gas.

See you when the weather bucks up!
Simon, Alison, Edith and all at Askett Nurseries
